We have spent quite a number of years putting together a quality mare/broodmare herd. We believe the mare has an effect on fifty percent of the production of the foal, at the very least. We say "at least" because the mare also has a great influence on the foal's temperament from birth to weaning. So, in essence, the mare has more of an impact, genetically plus formatively, in the desirable production of the foal we have bred.
Our very first broodmare selection was Severn Fancy Free. She was not only beautiful but had a great temperament and made a great child's first pony for the granddaughter.
Our second purchase was Alliance Silver Bow who produced our first homebred stallion, The Willows Numero Uno, and our current broodmare, The Willows Four Leaf Clover (Lucky).
Our third purchase was Justamere Jezebel, who gave us The Willows Second Guess (gelding), and one of our most important broodmares, The Willows First Chance.
We now have four mares with The Willows prefix that we retained for breeding, and plan to add a few more over the next three to five years. The Willows homebred broodmares to date are: The Willows First Chance, The Willows Third Charm, The Willows Four Leaf Clover, The Willows Evenstar (Arwen).
